The Investigation of the Accident
|
|
If the police arrive at the scene of the accident, they will keep their findings in an investigative file
(the location of the vehicles where they came to a halt immediately following the accident, tire and skid
marks, etc.). The police accident investigators are usually able to use these findings to deduce how the
accident occurred.
The police will write down the statements and various versions of the parties involved, and of those who
witnessed the incident.
The police will do a reconstruction of the accident, which will include calculations of distances, speeds,
and any other relevant information, in order to draw conclusions about the circumstances of the accident.
It should be noted that it is preferable to file a complaint as soon as possible after the incident, and no
later than three days after it.
The investigative unit will make a recommendation on any further action concerning the investigative file.
It can recommend prosecution of a person suspected of causing the accident, or closing and putting away the
investigative file. If prosecution is recommended, the case will be transferred to the Police Claims Unit
or the State Prosecutors Office, depending on the type of offence.
