The Police Traffic Department Control Center constitutes an important element of the Traffic Department’s operations. The Center is manned 24 hours a day by regular policemen, people performing their compulsory military service in the police, Public Works Department (PWD) personnel, and Voice of Israel radio personnel.
The Center personnel handle hundreds of incidents daily on interurban roads all over Israel. With the aid of many cameras placed on road segments and junctions, the optimal flow of traffic on the roads is monitored and supervised. With the help of special computer programs, the policemen at the Center can change the timing of traffic lights, according to the current volume of traffic at junctions.
Reports of various incidents are received at the Center, and relayed to police cars via the communications system. The Center personnel help the policemen in the field check vehicle registration and drivers’ licenses.
Hazards on the road are reported to the PWD personnel at the station, and handled by them. The PWD personnel operate a number of electronic boards dispersed along the roads. They notify drivers of traffic jams and incidents on the roads ahead of them.
The Voice of Israel representative at the Center immediately reports any traffic jam, accident, or any other traffic disturbance to Voice of Israel radio.
