The Commissioner of Police is Israel's senior police officer and commanding officer of the Israel Police (I.P.).

APPOINTING A COMMISSIONER OF POLICE
A Commissioner of Police is chosen by the government on the recommendation of the Minister of Public Security - who is responsible for the Police Service, as well as for the national Prison Service.

COMMISSIONER'S RESPONSIBILITIES
1. As commanding officer of the Israel Police, the Commissioner must ensure that:

The I.P. functions as required and fulfills its responsibilities;

The I.P. is properly organized and administered;

The I.P. is adequately staffed and its workforce properly managed;

The I.P. maintains internal order and discipline;

The I.P. budget and stores are properly managed and supervised;

Directives and orders are issued to the Israel Police as needed, under the powers accorded the Commissioner by Article 9(a) of the Police Ordinance (New Version), 1971.
2. The Commissioner directs the I.P.'s subsidiary units via Police District Commanders and the Commanding Officer of the Border Guard, and with the assistance of his staff at National Police Headquarters.

THE COMMISSIONER'S POWERS
1. The Commissioner possesses all the powers in law of any police officer.

2. In addition to the above, the Commissioner possesses the powers vested in him ex officio under the following items of legislation:

Police Regulations (Recruitment), 1957.

Defense Regulations (State of Emergency), 1954.

Return of Lost Property Regulations, 1965.

Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance, 1948.

Criminal Procedure Act (Consolidated Version), 1982.

Criminal Procedure Ordinance (Arrest & Search) [New Version], 1969.
